Smart Key / Proximity Key Fob (Push-Button Start)
A proximity “smart key” communicates with the vehicle for passive entry and push-button start. The vehicle detects the fob when it is nearby, allowing door handle unlock and engine start without inserting a key.
Features
- Proximity unlock/lock (passive entry)
- Push-button start authorization (immobilizer-enabled)
- Remote trunk release (if equipped)

Programming
🏢 Dealer RequiredProgramming typically requires an OEM-level scan tool or equivalent and proof of ownership. Many vehicles require all existing smart keys to be present during programming; lost-all-keys situations can require additional security steps and towing. Used OEM fobs may not be reusable if previously enrolled to another vehicle (depends on fob type and whether it can be reset).
⚠️ Common Issues
- Incompatible FCC ID/part number purchased online
- Used fob cannot be re-registered to the vehicle
- Weak coin battery causing intermittent proximity detection or reduced range
