Kia Smart Key (Proximity / Push-Button Start)
A proximity “Smart Key” communicates wirelessly with the vehicle for keyless entry and push-button start. When the fob is nearby, the Sorento can unlock via the door handle sensor (if equipped) and start with the START/STOP button; a hidden mechanical emergency key blade is typically included inside the fob for the driver’s door.
Features
- Proximity keyless entry (walk-up unlock on equipped trims)
- Push-button start authorization
- Remote panic alarm (and often remote liftgate on equipped trims)

Programming
🏢 Dealer RequiredSmart Key programming typically requires an automotive locksmith with the appropriate Kia-compatible tool and security credentials, or a Kia dealer. Many vehicles require all keys present during programming; adding a key can sometimes erase keys not present. If all keys are lost, additional steps (proof of ownership, possible immobilizer/BCM procedures, and towing in some cases) may apply. Remote start functionality (if present) is usually tied to the correct Smart Key part and successful programming.
⚠️ Common Issues
- Dead/weak CR2032 battery causing reduced range or no response
- Aftermarket fob has the wrong FCC ID/frequency and will not program
- Used fob is locked to another vehicle and cannot be re-registered
- Mechanical emergency key not cut, preventing door entry if the fob fails
