Standard remote head key (H-key) with transponder (non–push-button start)
This is the most common setup for the 2024 US-market 4Runner: a mechanical key blade for the doors/ignition plus an integrated transponder chip for the immobilizer, with remote buttons to lock/unlock and (on many vehicles) open the rear window. It is not a proximity “smart key”; you generally insert the key to start the vehicle.
Features
- Immobilizer transponder (required to start the engine)
- Remote lock/unlock and panic
- Rear window control on many configurations (button availability varies)

Programming
🏢 Dealer RequiredReplacement typically involves (1) cutting the correct Toyota key blade and (2) registering the transponder to the immobilizer and pairing the remote functions. Many consumers generally find that remote programming and immobilizer registration require specialized diagnostic tools and security access; DIY methods are inconsistent and often do not work on late-model Toyotas. If all keys are lost, additional steps are commonly required and costs may increase.
⚠️ Common Issues
- Wrong frequency/region remote purchased (US vs non-US variants)
- Remote buttons work but engine will not start due to unprogrammed/incorrect transponder
- Aftermarket shell swaps causing poor battery contact or broken button pads
- Used fobs may be locked to a prior vehicle and not re-registerable
